NTU’s Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI) collaborates with Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in Hai Phong

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with VSIP Hai Phong Co. Ltd to collaborate in research, education and feasibility studies in the 1,600-hectare industrial park located in Hai Phong city, Vietnam.

The strategic partnership will be formalised on 13 January 2010 with the presentation of the signed MOU by VSIP Hai Phong Co. Ltd, to Prof Ng Wun Jern, Executive Director of NEWRI, NTU. (VSIP Hai Phong Co. Ltd is commercially undertaken by a Vietnam-Singapore joint venture headed by Becamex IDC Corporation, a state-owned enterprise in Binh Duong; and a Singapore consortium led by Sembcorp Industries’ industrial parks business unit.)

“Research in environmental impact, water management and scenario analysis of flooding and drainage management are part of the key capabilities of NTU’s Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI) ecosystem. The partnership with VSIP Hai Phong Co. Ltd for better environmental management will help to enhance the excellent ties between Vietnam and Singapore. I’m confident this Sembcorp Industries and NTU-NEWRI collaboration will be a great springboard to achieving our objective of being a cutting-edge environment and water technology research institute to benefit industry and society.” says Prof Ng Wun Jern, Executive Director of NEWRI, NTU.

The collaboration, which is an expansion of NTU’s global network in environmental sciences research and development, will also help to propel Singapore’s efforts to become a global hub for environment and water for business, investment, research and technology. Areas of the possible collaborations include Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Development of VSIP, scenario analysis, water supply, wastewater management, solid waste management, and education and training.

The EIA & Development Project was chosen among a list of possible research projects as results obtained from studies on the river and the tributaries can help to achieve optimum design and management of the canal and stream flow. NEWRI will also assist to conduct scenario analysis of flooding and drainage management plan of the industrial park due to climate and land use changes in the surrounding areas.

Under the MOU, both parties will explore visits, the exchange of staff for research, study and discussions, the exchange of information including exchange of library materials and research publications including joint research activities and feasibility studies. The partnership will leverage the strengths of each institution to enhance collective capabilities and establish cutting edge environmental science education and research.
