Assoc Prof Tai Xue-Cheng wins 8th Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing in China

Associate Professor Tai Xue-Cheng, from Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the 8th Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing.

Assoc Prof Tai has been working on numerical analysis and computational mathematics, in particular, image processing in recent years. His mathematical modelling has been used to restore images that have been degraded due to wear and tear to their original look. He has also developed new models for MRI medical image processing and other medical and industrial applications.

Assoc Prof Tai will be receiving his award in Guangzhou, China on 23 November 2009. “It is a surprise and also an honour for me to receive this prestigious award for computational mathematics,” says Assoc Prof Tai. “This encourages me to continue to strive for excellence in my research and to seek solutions for challenging scientific problems. I feel that it is fun and rewarding to use mathematics knowledge to solve difficult problems from the industry and modern technology.”

The Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing honours Chinese scientists in China and abroad for significant contributions in scientific computing. Winners receive a prize of 20,000 Chinese Yuan (approximately S$4000). The award is presented biennially and recognises Chinese mathematicians for their achievements in numerical linear algebra, computer aided geometric design, and numerical partial differential equations and scientific computing.

The Feng Kang Prize is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Feng Kang (1920-1993), the pioneer in the field of Chinese computational mathematics. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as the founding director of the Computing Centre of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
