Leading shipping company NORDEN inaugurates Management Trainee Programme in Singapore - takes in 2 outstanding students from NTU

NORDEN Shipping (Singapore) Pte Ltd (Norden), a subsidiary of NORDEN, a leading shipping company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, partners Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to groom young talent for the booming maritime industry.

The Company is launching its inaugural Management Trainee Programme in Singapore. It will also be providing scholarships and book prizes for students in NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s (CEE) Maritime Studies degree programme.

NORDEN Management Trainee Programme
This is the first time that Norden is introducing its trainee programme to Singapore. The two-year NORDEN Management Trainee Programme will take in two outstanding graduates each year.

Annually two outstanding graduates of NTU’s Maritime studies will be selected for the programme.  NTU’s Maritime Studies programme is the only such degree programme in Singapore and is conducted jointly with the Norwegian School of Management (BI).  It aims to produce graduates who can take on leadership roles in Singapore’s drive to be an internationally-renowned maritime hub. The programme was started in 2004 and will see its pioneer batch graduate this July.

The Norden management trainees will receive in-depth knowledge and be based in NORDEN’s Singapore office.  During the training period, the trainees will be attached to the operations as well as the chartering department learning responsibility for ships and customers.  Trainees will also study Maritime law.  Additionally, the trainees will get an opportunity to travel on one of NORDEN’s ships and visit ports to gain first hand knowledge on loading and discharge operations.

After the two year stint, most trainees are typically offered jobs in any of NORDEN’s offices in Annapolis, Copenhagen, Mumbai, Rio de Janerio or Shanghai .

NORDEN has similar management trainee recruitment efforts in Shanghai, China, Denmark, and more recently in Annapolis, U.S.A.

2 outstanding students from NTU will commence their trainee programme with NORDEN from July 2008.

Norden Tankers & Bulkers Scholarship
To further encourage top students to the industry, Norden has set up an endowment fund of S$ 400,000 including government matching at NTU for a NORDEN Shipping (Singapore) Scholarship.

The fund will provide S$ 8,000 per scholarship for the span of an academic year for a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident in his 3rd or 4th year undergraduate study in Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies, or the newly launched Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies with Business Major.

Applicants will be selected based on strong academic results selected by the NTU Scholarship Selection Committee(s). Successful applicants will spend an internship in Norden Singapore’s office.

NORDEN Book Prize
NORDEN also unveiled plans for awarding an endowment of S$ 30,000 for a Book Prize of which $1,500 is awarded annually to a deserving student of NTU’s Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies.

Mr Peter Borup, Managing Director & Group Vice President of Norden Shipping (Singapore) Pte Ltd said, “Singapore is a strategic Hub for us at NORDEN and these initiatives are timely and consistent with our strategy to attract ambitious, smart and motivated people to the company.”

Associate Professor Teh Cee Ing, Chair, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTU, said, “NTU is pleased to receive NORDEN’s support for our graduates and students.  These initiatives, coupled with NTU’s strengths in maritime studies, will greatly encourage our students and help attract even more top students to the programmes. I believe our partnership will groom top talents for this important industry and contribute to Singapore’s drive up the value chain as an International Maritime Centre.”
