NTU brings together top Singaporean and Chinese minds at inaugural forum on science, technology and entrepreneurship

NTU, PKU and CSPSTC seal MOU to promote cooperation and exchanges between academia and industry of both countries

Top business executives, technology experts and scientists from Singapore and China will come together to discuss the potential synergies between science, technology and entrepreneurship to promote economic growth at an inaugural technopreneurship forum in Beijing on 20 April 2013.

About 250 government and industry leaders, academics, scientists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and students are attending the NTC Zhongguancun Technopreneurship Forum at Peking University (PKU). Named after the technology hub in Haidian, Beijing, the forum will discuss topics such as the impact of science on sustainable economic growth, issues and challenges of technopreneurship, and opportunities generated by innovation.

The forum is organised by Singapore's Nanyang Technopreneurship Center (NTC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in partnership with the Peking University School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the China Society for the Promotion of Science and Technology Commercialization (CSPSTC). The culmination of NTU's Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation (MSc TIP) China Immersion Program, the inaugural forum is expected to be the first in a series organised by the three partners.

The Master's degree course equips aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders with the requisite skills and knowledge to leverage advanced technology and expertise in global business practices. A unique aspect of the course is immersion trips to China and the United States. The immersion stints enable course participants to gain first-hand experience about the unique economic environment and business culture of the two countries.

The forum is particularly significant, given that Peking University and Nanyang Technological University are among the top universities in Asia, and have been close academic partners for years.  Dubbed the "Harvard of China", Peking University is among China's most prestigious institutions of higher education. Similarly, the CSPSTC is a highly respected organisation that plays a key role in the development of China’s economy.

To stimulate discussion, the organisers have lined up eminent speakers, such as Mr Zhu Min, Chairman, Cybernaut (China) Capital and President, Zhejiang University Innovation Institute; Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore; Professor Chen Dongmin, Dean, Peking University School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and Mr Andy Lim, Chairman, Viking Offshore Marine and Tembusu Partners Private Limited, Singapore.

Guest of Honour, Mr Xu Guanhua, Fellow, Chinese Academy of Science, and Chairman, CSPSTC says, “This forum provides an ideal platform for members of the entrepreneurship community to interact with each other and to share global perspectives on science, technology and entrepreneurship. I am very glad to see the excellent collaboration between the partner organizations from China and Singapore.”

Forum speaker Mr Inderjit Singh, a member of the NTU Board of Trustees and Chairman of the NTU Enterprise Committee, says, "The 21st century is tilting towards an economy driven by science and technology. The ability to harness science and technology and convert them into useful inventions and innovations will be crucial to raising the standard of living for humankind.  Against this backdrop, the key economic challenge is to develop a sustainable and vibrant economy that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship across borders.  I am confident that this forum will create greater awareness about the powerful economic impact of entrepreneurship. It will also encourage greater creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship among the people of both countries.”

Milestone MOU brings China and Singapore closer together

To further strengthen cooperation among the organising institutions, NTU’s Nanyang Technopreneurship Center, PKU’s School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and CSPSTC will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the forum.

The MOU marks a new milestone in the efforts of the three organisations to promote closer collaboration and engagement between academia and industry of both Singapore and China.  This includes jointly organising conferences, seminars, exchanges and visits in the areas of technological innovation and entrepreneurship, technology financing and technology commercialization.
