NTU Dragon Boat Team triumphs at the annual Prime Minister's Cup Challenge
The Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Dragon Boat Team won both the men's and women's Prime Minister's Cup Challenge Trophies at the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival. For the men's team their victory was even sweeter as it was their second consecutive win.
The annual competition, organised by the Singapore Dragon Boat Association and the People’s Association, was held at the Marina Barrage on 27 and 28 June 2009.
The NTU team took part in eight categories over the two days, including the Prime Minister Cup (Men), Prime Minister Cup (Women) and National Championship (Mixed). The rowers also did NTU proud by bagging awards in the following categories:
- Tertiary (Mixed) – 1st
- Tertiary (Men) – 1st
The dragon boaters received the much-coveted trophies and medals from guest-of-honour Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean.
Team captain Derick Tan, 24, said of his team’s win: “The NTU Dragon Boat Team is proud to have defended our title as champions for the second consecutive year. The team’s shared vision, passion for the sport and great synergy were the key factors which propelled us to clinch the title. All the sacrifices the team made and the time and efforts that we put in for training paid off. We’re glad we made it to the top as a team.”
He added: “Now that we emerged as the overall champion, we'll be even more motivated to train harder to keep our title for the third year running, which is something that no other university has achieved before.”
First mooted by then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in 1999 as a race between NTU and NUS, the Prime Minister's Cup race may be likened to the highly contested annual boat race between Oxford University and Cambridge University.
