NTU crowned Asian Universities Debating Champion

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Debating Squad defeated seven-time champion Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines (ADMU) to win the 4th Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC) 2008 on 21 May 2008.

AUDC 2008, hosted by the International Islamic University, Malaysia, saw 87 teams from 49 universities – the largest number of teams in its tournament history – vying for the coveted title. The other participants included National University of Singapore; Singapore Management University; University of the Philippines; Multimedia University, Malaysia; and Mahidol University, Thailand.

NTU’s win came as a well-deserved victory since the semi finals saw Singapore’s three Universities (NTU, NUS and SMU) and ADMU head-to-head for the final round positions. NTU beat NUS with a four-three win in the semi-finals to assume one of the Finals positions while ADMU succeeded in securing the final spot by beating SMU. The seven-time champ ADMU, met their match in NTU when the NTU Debating Squad gave a consistent debating performance throughout the 12 rounds to triumph as this year’s champions – beating not only ADMU but also the two Singapore universities. What was most impressive was the fact that the NTU Debating Team is a relatively young team whose members - Aditya Vijaya Kumar, Anindya Dutta and current squad captain, Madhav Janakiraman – are aged between 19 to 21 years and have little experience in AUDC with this year being their first year at the competition in comparison to the other teams who are regulars.

Squad captain, 20 year-old Madhav adds: “The whole competition has been an amazing experience and it was definitely exhilarating to have won this competition because we were up against very experienced opponents. We are very happy as firstly, it is a personal victory but most of all we are glad to be able to win this for NTU.”

About The Asian Universities Debating Championship

The Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC) is the Premier Debating Championship in Asia. Being the largest debating tournament in the region, it has attracted more than 200 teams across Asia since its inception. Beginning in 2005, the Asian debating community decided to create a flagship tournament that ensures transparency in all areas, is highly competitive, and provides top grade adjudication and tabbing process. With these principles in mind, the founding institutions convened in Singapore and decided to form the AUDC to decide the “Champions of Asia”

About NTU Debating Squad

Since the NTU Debating Squad’s inception in 1991, the university has been one of the strongholds of Asian debating. NTU takes part in three major international tournaments every year: AUDC, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship (Australs) and the World Universities’ Debating Championship (Worlds). The university has hosted all three tournaments over the years. At Australs, NTU teams have frequently been ranked among the top eight teams in the region. At Worlds 2004, NTU Debate Squad alumni Rajesh Krishnan and Amit Bhatia reached the Grand Finals while studying at the Singapore Institute of Management. To date, they remain the only Asian team to have done so.
