NTU aviation education takes flight with Asia Pacific award

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has received regional recognition at this year’s Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Aerospace & Defense Awards. NTU is singled out as the “2009 Aerospace Academic Institution of the year” in recognition for its outstanding role in nurturing the best Aerospace engineers for the future and providing them with skills to meet industry’s high standards.

“It is very heartening to receive the award as it illustrates the leadership role that NTU continues to play in developing talent for Singapore’s growth industries. This award is especially meaningful to us as we only started our aerospace engineering programme in year 2005. We would like to thank the organiser for recognising our commitment to providing the highest possible training for the aviation industry within the region. We will continue to work with industry partners to provide our students with the best curriculum, knowledge and skills for a high-flying career in the aerospace industry,” says Professor Ling Shih Fu, Acting Chair of NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

NTU is conferred the award based on the student enrolment, quality and diversity of courses and curriculum, professional opportunities and its network with industry and partners.

Associate Professor Simon Yu, NTU's Acting Head of Aerospace Engineering, will receive the award from Ms Cecilia Chang, Frost & Sullivan Senior Vice-President, at the award banquet on 5 March 2009.

NTU’s four-year Aerospace Engineering degree programme offered by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is the first and only aerospace engineering degree course in Singapore. Launched in 2005, the course is designed to meet the strong demands presented by the lucrative aviation industry, which is technology driven, investment intensive and prides itself on highly skilled manpower. In view of its relevance to industry, this course has received the overwhelming support of the Economic Development Board, Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore), SIA Engineering Company, DSO Laboratories, Republic of Singapore Air Force, Rolls Royce International, Pratt & Whitney, Turbine Overhaul Services, Hamiliton Sundstrand and Eurocopter South East Asia, just to name a few.
