NTU don and YouTube celebrity receives international engineering accolade

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Professor and Dean of Admissions Lalit Goel has one more feather to add to his cap.

Professor Goel, who is fondly known by his students both past and present as the humourous-professor-turned-YouTube star, was presented the 2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award on 28 July 2009 in Calgary, Canada. Professor Goel became an instantaneous virtual celebrity when a video of one of his lectures in which he showed a series of slides containing funny feedback of students past was posted on YouTube three years ago.

The IEEE PES Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award recognises outstanding power engineering educators for excellence in teaching, ability to inspire students, innovations in power engineering education, and championing the power engineering profession, among other things. The IEEE is a worldwide, non-profit association with more than 375,000 members, of which 24,000 individuals are engaged in the electric power industry.

Professor Goel is no stranger to awards. The 49-year-old received the IEEE PES Singapore Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award in 2000 for his outstanding contributions in educational and professional activities and dynamic leadership to the IEEE PES Singapore Chapter and the IEEE Power Engineering Society. Throughout his 18 years as a lecturer at NTU, he received 17 teaching awards from NTU, EEE and the EEE Club of NTU.  This includes the recent “Most Energetic Professor” Award 2009 from the EEE Club of NTU, and several “Teacher of the Year Award” from NTU and EEE.

On receiving the award, Prof Goel commented: “It is an honour and a privilege for me to have received this award from the IEEE PES. I believe this is the first time that this award has been bestowed to someone from Asia, which makes the award very special. I would like to take this opportunity to thank NTU for her support, and my family and friends who have stayed with me through thick and thin. Awards such as these reinforce my conviction that if one teaches with passion and dedication, his work will be eventually recognised and rewarded.”
