NTU’s green compressor wins at World’s Best Technologies Showcase
The green and novel compressor, developed by NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Ooi Kim Tiow and Research Associate Teh Yong Liang, wins the silver prize at the World’s Best Technologies Showcase (WBTshowcase), held from 24 to 25 March 2009 at Arlington, Texas.
The winning NTU-developed ‘Revolving Vane Compressor’ is potentially one of the most energy-efficient in the world. It could reduce energy loss by 80 percent when compared to the compressors currently available in the market which will result in worldwide energy savings of US$16 billion a year for heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems (HRAC).
This year, more than 300 technologies were submitted and only 88 projects were short-listed to be presented at the WBTshowcase. NTU was the only Asian university selected to present among the world’s best companies, research institutions and universities from United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
“Industry judges and experts at the event have given us very positive feedback. Most of them commented that the compressor has a very elegant and simple design, and they are confident that it will revolutionise the compressor industry with its energy efficiency improvements,” says Dr Alex Yu, Director of NTU’s Innovation & Technology Transfer Office.
