NTU hosts senior officials led by Danish Prime Minister His Excellency Lars Løkke Rasmussen

His Excellency Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Prime Minister (PM) of Denmark, visits Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on 6 March 2010. The overall purpose of the visit is to witness the successful partnership between NTU and DHI and to learn more about Singapore’s research capabilities in water and environment technologies. PM Rasmussen is accompanied by senior officials including Her Excellency Vibeke Rovsing Lauritzen, Danish Ambassador to Singapore, and Mr Karsten Dybvad, Danish Permanent Secretary of State.

PM Rasmussen and his delegation are received by NTU President Dr Su Guaning.

The event marks the strong bilateral relations between Denmark and Singapore, and the good research and development progress made by scientists from Denmark and Singapore.
“The DHI-NTU Water & Environment Research Centre and Education Hub (DHI-NTU Centre) is an important member of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) ecosystem.  We thank Denmark for her contributions to our efforts for mutual benefit. There is much that the DHI-NTU Centre can achieve in advancing environment and water technology.  We are proud today to host this visit by our most distinguished visitor, the Prime Minister of Denmark. I look forward to close collaboration between Singapore and Danish companies energised by the DHI-NTU Centre,” says Dr Su.

The visit to NTU includes an overview of the university’s research compatibilities and activities, as well as some of the ongoing research projects by the DHI-NTU Centre. The visitors will be given a deeper insight into the successful collaborative research undertaken by the DHI-NTU Centre and the projects undertaken by DHI.

The DHI-NTU Centre is an inter-disciplinary centre, encompassing both research and education in the area of water and the environment. With the expertise of both DHI Singapore and NTU, the centre is working towards developing environmentally-friendly solutions, tools and technologies to improve our quality of life,” says NTU’s Associate Professor Tan Soon Keat, who co-directs the DHI-NTU Centre with Centre Leader Dr Ole Larsen.
During the visit, PM Rasmussen also meets researchers from the DHI-NTU Centre. The Centre currently has more than 80 on-going research projects ranging from the development of new waste water treatment methods to advanced IT systems for planning and designing of urban waste infrastructure, and novel environmental management strategies.

About DHI Singapore
DHI's experience in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines dates back to the 1970's. DHI Singapore office was established in 2003 following several large projects in Singapore.

DHI Water and Environment (S) is a subsidiary of DHI in Denmark and have a short but very successful history in Singapore. The regional office was established in 2003 with a staff of only 4 and has been rapidly growing to a staff of now over 100 serving Singapore industry and government with environmental services.

One of the keys to this success is the introduction of technology developed in DHI Denmark since 1963 when DHI was formed as a private institution from the technical university of Denmark. Most notably in this context the introduction of mathematical modeling of marine waters that led to the appointment of DHI as independent consultant jointly for Singapore and Malaysia for the study of reclamation at Pulau Tekong and Tuas View Extension in 2004.

Later another transfer of Danish technology in the form of environmental monitoring and management methodology known as ‘feed back monitoring’ further solidified DHI’s presence in Singapore. This technology was originally developed for the large Danish bridge projects: The Great Belt Bridge and the Øresund Bridge from Denmark to Sweden. Now this system is used for the environmental management of the majority of land reclamation projects in Singapore, making sure that these major undertakings are done according to highest possible environmental standards.

The latest major development for DHI Singapore took place in 2007 when DHI and NTU joined forces to form the DHI-NTU Water and Environment Research Centre and Education Hub under the Services Capability Programme of EWI. The focus area of the DHI-NTU research center is to support Singapore industry with development of new technology within areas of urban and industrial water management, Environmental Impact Assessment, solid waste and decision support systems. Currently more than 80 research projects are on-going ranging from the development of new waste water treatment methods to advanced IT systems for planning and design of urban water infrastructure, over tidal power and novel environmental management strategies.
