NTU Singapore launches Brunei alumni association
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) is launching a new alumni association in Brunei Darussalam today. The NTU Alumni Association (Brunei) is the 94th Alumni Association established by the University to better engage and connect with its alumni community in Singapore and overseas.
Guest-of-Honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs, Brunei Darussalam and His Excellency Mr Lim Hong Huai, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to Brunei will launch the NTU Alumni Association (Brunei) at the Radisson Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan this evening, joined by about 80 alumni and guests.
Also attending the launch event is Professor Alan Chan, NTU Vice-President (Alumni and Advancement), who said, “Alumni engagement is one of NTU’s highest priorities, and the new Alumni Association will enable the University to build a strong community of current and future alumni here in Brunei, through various programmes, activities and other meaningful engagement opportunities.”
Dr Salbrina Sharbawi, Senior Assistant Professor at the University of Brunei Darussalam leads the new NTU Alumni Association (Brunei). She graduated with a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the National Institute of Education (NIE), NTU Singapore in 2009.
Dr Salbrina said, “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve my alma mater, NTU Singapore. A growing number of Bruneians are choosing NTU as their preferred study destination. Through the new Alumni Association, we hope to work together with the University to foster closer collaboration and connections between the NTU alumni based in Brunei and the University, and to build an environment in which alumni are supportive of each other and the University's goals and initiatives.”
Besides building a cohesive alumni community, the NTU Alumni Association (Brunei) also plans to set up a network of business affiliates, or companies and businesses that will offer special privileges to NTU alumni based in Brunei, such as food and beverage promotions, and discounts on tailor-made apparel.
NTU today has more than 244,000 alumni in 162 countries, of which 96 alumni reside in Brunei. NTU also has 24 Alumni Circles in countries or cities with small numbers of alumni.
