NTU sets new records with 218-km Run Round Singapore

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has re-written the records book! Three new records were set. These are:

Longest Ultra-Marathon (218km, 68 relay stations, 9030 participants);

Fastest 218-km Ultra-Marathon Runner (Male) – Mr Yong Yuen Cheng / 31hr 28min 51sec;

Longest Ultra-Marathon Runner (Female) – Ms Yong Yean Pin Adeline (129.3km).

The record of Highest Participation Relay Run Round Singapore (168km, 50 relay stations, 3,593 participants) was set five years ago when NTU celebrated its 50th anniversary.

To create a carnival-like atmosphere, sports competitions featuring 3-on-3 basketball, 5-a-side soccer, 3-a-side floorball, and 4-a-side netball competitions were held in the early afternoon. While awaiting the return of the nine core runners, the 1000-strong crowd was also entertained by NTU’s Cultural Activities Club dancers who performed slick break-dancing turns and twists, and sassy salsa moves.

Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Raymond Lim, was among the 1000 spectators who welcomed back the 200 relay runners from the 68th relay station, who were flagged off and led by Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC Mr Alvin Yeo.

Mr Lim presented tokens of appreciation to the nine core runners, and plaques to representatives from the supporting organisations and sponsors of Run Round Singapore.

NTU President Dr Su Guaning announced that Run Round Singapore had raised $218,000, which will go towards strengthening the university’s bursaries base for future generations of NTU students who need financial help to complete their studies. NTU’s Chief University Advancement Officer Mr Chew Kheng Chuan presented the $218,000 cheque to Dr Su.

“The success of Run Round Singapore sends a strong signal that NTU is well prepared for its role as host to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in August, when we welcome over 5,000 young athletes and officials from around the world to our beautiful Yunnan Garden campus,” said Dr Su.

Run Round Singapore is supported by the People’s Association (and its Constituency Sports Clubs), Singapore Sports Council, South West Community Development Council, Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, Singapore Athlete Association, Health Promotion Board, and the National Parks Board, among other organisations.
