Vingroup, Vietnam's leading private conglomerate, has made a S$5 million gift to Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), to establish scholarships for graduate students.

Slightly more than half of the Vingroup Graduate Scholarship Fund will be distributed over seven years to provide scholarships for PhD and Master’s degree students starting from 2020. The remainder creates an endowed fund to support the scholarships in perpetuity.

The agreement was signed by Dr Le Mai Lan, Vingroup’s Vice Chairwoman cum President of the VinUniversity Project, and Professor Ling San, Provost and Vice President (Academic) of NTU Singapore in Hanoi today.

Professor Ling San said, “This generous gift from Vingroup will be invaluable in attracting and supporting some of Vietnam's most talented young postgraduate students. As a university dedicated to providing opportunities for world class higher education and research, we are grateful for Vingroup's support. We hope that this will inspire other donors to create similar scholarship funds at NTU.”

“NTU has built a solid reputation through continuous innovation in science and technology and through close connection with the industry. The establishment of the Vingroup scholarship programme at NTU will provide excellent Vietnamese students with opportunities to study and research in the world's leading educational environment. Following this agreement, we will explore opportunities to expand cooperation between Vingroup, VinUniversity and NTU in such areas as research, training and development of high quality human resources for the future,” said Dr Le Mai Lan, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup cum President of the VinUniversity Project.

Vietnamese students who are pursuing a PhD or Master’s degree in the areas of science, technology, and engineering, and who fulfil NTU’s admissions requirements may apply for the scholarship.

Each scholarship award covers full tuition and miscellaneous fees, and provides a monthly stipend. The scholarship will cover the maximum candidature of 4 years for PhD students, and 2 years for Master's degree students. Any surplus funding from the Vingroup Fund will go towards collaborative research projects, as well as visits, and faculty and student exchanges between NTU and VinUniversity, a new, private, non-profit university established by Vingroup in March 2018, focusing on three fields of study: Business, Technology, and Health Sciences.

In addition, NTU Singapore is exploring future collaboration opportunities with Vingroup and VinUniversity that is scheduled to welcome its first cohort of 300 students in fall 2020.
