NTU’s Nanyang Business School and ISCA launch business valuation course

Published on: 14-Jul-2015

The Nanyang Business School (NBS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) have launched Singapore’s first professional business valuation course.

The five-day programme will help auditors, accountants and finance managers master the art and science of assessing a company’s fair value for financial reporting.

The ISCA-Nanyang Business Valuation for Financial Reporting programme will be offered two to three times a year, with the first run commencing on 24 August 2015.

Supported by the Institute of Valuers and Appraisers of Singapore (IVAS), an institute under the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC), the executive training course is part of Singapore’s plan to become a leading global accountancy hub for Asia by 2020.

Mr Lee Fook Chiew, Chief Executive Officer of ISCA, said: “Business valuation has come into the spotlight in recent times as international standards for fair value assessment take shape amid an increasingly volatile and complex business environment. We are pleased to offer this vital programme in partnership with Nanyang Business School.

“The ISCA-Nanyang Business Valuation for Financial Reporting programme will complement the Singapore Qualification Programme and other professional development initiatives in enhancing the competency and aptitude of accountancy professionals.  It also enhances diversity in the talent pool by enabling accountancy professionals to provide a high value-adding specialised service such as business valuation.”

Prof Ravi Kumar, Shaw Chair Professor and Dean of Nanyang Business School, said: “Business and asset valuation has become increasingly important in the CPA world and it is important for business valuation practitioners to stay current with best practices in the field. This new course will enhance the decision-making skills of professionals who will play an active role in the next phase of the accountancy sector’s growth and development.”

The ISCA-Nanyang programme will focus on valuation for financial reporting purposes. It will provide participants with a conceptual framework and process for determining the fair value of a company, which is often complicated by intangible assets, employee share options and financial instruments.

On top of knowledge about the various valuation approaches and methodologies, the course will equip participants with practical tools and techniques for real world use.

Mr Uantchern Loh, Chief Executive of SAC, said: “The joint programme between ISCA and NTU will, over time, help to raise the bar for professional competency in the area of business valuation amongst accountants. SAC is delighted to support this programme.”

The course will be taught by Associate Professor Low Buen Sin, associate dean at Nanyang Business School; Mr Eric Teo, IVAS chairman and executive director of Ernst & Young’s transaction advisory services group in Singapore; and Mr Lie Kok Keong, deals partner and head of the valuation and merger & acquisition practices of PwC Singapore.
