Five NTU subjects in global top 10

​Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has scored its best performance with five subject areas in the global top 10, and 21 subjects in the world’s top 50, in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject announced today. 


In a first for NTU, five of its subject offerings rank among the world’s top 10. Materials Science (3rd) leads the pack, followed by Electrical & Electronic Engineering (6th). NTU’s Communication & Media Studies (8th), Chemistry (9th) and Civil & Structural Engineering (10th) are ranked in the world top 10 for the first time.

In addition to these five subjects, another six NTU disciplines rank among the world’s top 20. They are: Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (11th), Chemical Engineering (12th), Computer Science & Information Systems (12th), Environmental Sciences (14th), Education (14th), and Library & Information Management (18th).

Its strong performance in engineering sees NTU rank 6th in the world for Engineering & Technology under the broad Subject (Faculty area) rankings. This makes NTU top in Singapore for Engineering & Technology for three years running. NTU also made it into the Top 20 for Natural Sciences (No.17) and Social Sciences & Management (No.19).

Impressive gains across the board

Overall, NTU improved in 17 out of the 21 subjects that are ranked in the top 50.

Psychology jumps up the most by 58 places from No.98 to No.40. Business Management Studies (No.27) and Biological Sciences (No.43) both make big jumps of 13 places from the previous year. NTU’s Civil & Structural Engineering is another big climber, moving up 11 places from No.21 last year. Economics & Econometrics also jump 11 places to No.47.

In the Arts and Humanities, NTU’s Art & Design has moved up 10 places to clinch 30th position in the world.

Among Social Sciences subjects, NTU’s Statistics & Operational Research has advanced seven places to No.36. Economics & Econometrics (No.47) and Sports-related Subjects (No.47) are ranked in the top 50 for the first time.

In the Natural Sciences, besides Chemistry’s 9th placing in the world top 10 for the first time, Environmental Sciences and Physics & Astronomy are ranked at No.14 and No.28 respectively.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 highlights the world’s top universities in 48 subject areas. Published annually since 2011, the rankings look at academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, based on citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject.
