19 subjects in global top 50
Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) continues to hold its leadership position in the world’s university league tables.
In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017, NTU is ranked 4th worldwide for Engineering & Technology by faculty. In terms of faculty ranking, NTU also consolidated its strength in Natural Sciences at 17th position. The university held steady in the Social Sciences at 22nd place, while its Arts & Humanities was ranked 51st.
NTU was named among the world’s 10 best universities for two subjects. NTU’s Electrical & Electronic Engineering is ranked 6th and Materials Science is 7th internationally. In Electrical & Electronic Engineering, NTU is ahead of some of the world’s top universities, including Harvard University, University of Oxford and California Institute of Technology.
Electrical & Electronic Engineering has jumped 30 places, while Materials Science has leaped 34 places since the launch of the subject rankings in 2011.
Besides having two subjects in the global top 10, NTU has 8 disciplines ranked among the world's top 20 and 19 in the top 50 (see table below for complete list of NTU subjects in the world’s top 50).
The other 6 NTU disciplines in the top 20 are: Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (11th), Communications & Media (14th), Chemistry (16th), Chemical Engineering (17th), Education (18th), Computer Science & Information Systems (20th).
Top in Singapore for 6 subjects
NTU is No. 1 in Singapore for Electrical & Electronic Engineering (6th globally); Materials Science (7th globally); Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (11th globally); Education (18th globally); Hospitality & Leisure Management (25th globally) and Earth & Marine Sciences (101-150 band).
Big moves across the board
Overall, NTU improved in 8 out of the 19 subjects that are ranked in the top 50. The four biggest movers were NTU’s Biological Sciences (44th), which improved the most by 11 places from last year; Art & Design (40th) that jumped 8 places; and Environmental Sciences (23rd) and Statistics & Operational Research (32nd) – both moved up four places from the previous year.
NTU also fared well in other subjects, including Accounting & Finance (21st), Civil & Structural Engineering (22nd), Business & Management Studies (36th), Mathematics (43rd) and Physics & Astronomy (47th). In the arts, humanities and social sciences, NTU was also highly ranked, especially in Art & Design (40th) and Linguistics (44th).
Two NTU subjects - Hospitality & Leisure Management and Sports-related Subjects – are ranked for the first time.
